Employer of the Year Award 2007

A big cheer for the Second Employer of the Year 2007 Award Winners

The Award giving ceremony was held at Movenpick Hotel on Friday 25th May. It was a tight race amongst Swissport Tanzania, Standard Chartered Bank winners of the Last Employer of the year Award and Tanzania Breweries Limited. In the Employer of the Year Award 2005, Tanzania Breweries Limited were the first runners up.


A happy moment for Tanzania Breweries (TBL), the Overall Employer of the Year for 2007. The Gold Award trophy was received by Mr. Kabeho Solo the TBL Director for Human Resources from Capt. (rtd) Chiligati the Minister of Labour who represented the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania His Exelency Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein.

Scooping more and more certificates and trophies as the evening progressed the three companies kept their spirits high as they kept on being called out for yet another mention. At the end of it all Tanzania Breweries Tanzania Limited emerged “The Employer of the Year 2007”.


Mr. Hemed Shah the CEO, of Standard Chartered Bank (T) Ltd receives the trophy as first runners up for the overall Employer of the Year Award 2007 from the Minister of Labour, Captain (retired) Chiligati.

The Silver Award went to Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Limited while the Bronze Award went to Swissport Tanzania Limited. All in all 11 trophies and numerous certificates were given out under various categories.

Speaking at the occasion the Chief Guest said the night’s event was a clear testimonial of the importance the Association of Tanzania Employers and Business in General attach, to the ideals of business ethics and standards. He added that the Award is a clear manifestation of how businesses are rediscovering their important role not only in creating wealth and making profits through ensuring returns on their investment, but going beyond to ensure that the conduct of business is within the framework of Good Corporate Governance.

The Chief Guest added that one way of ensuring that Tanzania has in place good Corporate Governance, is by maintaining harmonious labour relations through the observance of the labour laws and the constitution of the country

The Chairperson of the Association of Tanzania Employers Mr. Nicholas H. Mbwanji speaking at the same occasion said that the Association intends to use the annual Employer of the Year Award competition to promote the “labour market governance”. He added that as an Employers’ organization the Association of Tanzania Employers has a role to sensitize and encourage its member enterprises and employers to promote and initiate strategic in-house plans and programmes to promote human capital development.

In addition the Executive Director of the Association Dr. Aggrey Mlimuka said that the Association organised the first Employer of the Year Award in 2005 as an annual event with the main aim of promoting and encouraging the highest degree of best practices in Human Resources Management amongst its membership employers.

Explaining further Dr. Mlimuka said that according to lessons learnt from the Employer of the Year 2005 Award and from the anxiety of members it was decided that another category of the Award should be introduced in terms of sizes , thus encouraging Small , medium and Large enterprise to participate.

Under the theme “Harmonious labour Relations for Productivity and Competitiveness” the second Employer of the Year survey was opened to all members of the Association of Tanzania Employers. Questionnaires were returned to Ernest and Young the independent consultant who carried out the survey. The questionnaires came in from all over the country from enterprises ranging from small to large.

The Director of Business and Advisory Services Mr. Hugh Fraser explained to diners present that the top thirteen companies were visited physically to verify what was written in the questionnaires was true. He further went on to explain that if they found out that the organization or company had exceeded in what was written compared to what was on the ground the organization earned bonus marks.

Organised by the Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) the Awards have attracted a number of corporate sponsors including Stanbic Bank the main sponsor for the Award Giving Event. Other sponsors included CRDB Bank, Tanzania Cigarette Company (TCC), and Parastatal Pension Fund (PPF). The survey itself was sponsored by DANIDA and the International Labour Organization (ILO)
