OPENING REMARKS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ATE DR. AGGREY K. MLIMUKA AT EYA BREAKFAST MEETING HELD AT SEA CLIFF HOTEL DAR ES SALAAM ON MONDAY 29th APRIL 2019
Our valued Employers, participants of EYA 2018, interested HR Practitioners and EYA Consultant,
Good morning to you all and thank you very much for taking the time to attend to this short meeting,
The Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) would like to first of all thank you sincerely for taking part in the Employer of the Year Award 2018 which took place on Friday 14th December 2018 at Mlimani City Conference Centre.
Why we have invited you today
Employer of the Year Award is increasing becoming an important event for Employers, recognised at national level and therefore it is important you get to understand the process and your feedback so that we make this better and better.
The Consultant has finished compiling the EYA Report and we thought it wise this time that we invite so that we can hear from the Consultant the reasons “why the winners won” and as mentioned receive feedback from you on how to improve this event this year.
As the Voice of Employers in Tanzania, one of ATE’s core mandates is to advocate and promote best management practices in Human Resources Management and standards among employers in order to create harmonious working environment so that they operate smoothly and achieve more.
This we do through advisory services, training and seminars, in-house and public, reviewing and drafting of documents and advocacy.
Employer of the Year Awards (EYA) is an annual event introduced in 2005 to recognise employers with outstanding achievements in human resource practices. Through this important activity, ATE seeks to sensitize and promote the value of international best management practices and standards in improving productivity and competitiveness.
The Award has been well received and is credited with raising both ATE & Employers’ visibility and profile among existing and potential members who value the opportunity to benchmark their human resource practices against their peers and gain national recognition.
Objectives of the Award
- To recognise ATE members that have excelled in putting in place outstanding HR management policies and best business practices.
- To recognise and benchmark employers with best Human Resource practices.
- To provide feedback to participating employers on their status regarding attainment of best practice in Human Resource Management.
Participation in EYA is open to all paid up ATE members and is free of charge. The classification of organisations by size is as per the SME Development Policy of from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of 2003 thus to qualify for the size award category, a member must have the required minimum number of employees
The administration of EYA is normally outsourced to an independent consultant through a competitive bidding process managed by ATE. The consultant works closely with ATE Secretariat and is responsible for:
- developing the survey methodology,
- selection and verification criteria,
- designing and pre-testing the survey questionnaire,
- highlighting gaps observed during the selection process and propose mitigations,
- selecting winners,
- preparing detailed reports of the award process,
- labelling winners’ trophies and certificates &
- Assisting with presentation of the awards during the awards ceremony
ATE Secretariat arranges advertising and promotion of the survey and awards ceremony as well as communication with members, the media and stakeholders.
The Secretariat is responsible for planning and coordinating the award ceremony which includes all event management aspects except for labelling of the winner’s trophies and preparation of certificates which, for confidentiality reasons, is assigned to the consultant.
The results of the annual EYA survey are announced at a special dinner gala and awards ceremony that is organised by ATE and jointly coordinated with the consultant. The consultant is tasked not to disclose the results before the awards ceremony.
Let me end up my remarks by informing you that today we will be launching EYA 2019 so all employers are your time to take part on this. Also EYA Minimum Standard is already out to guide you in making self-assessment.
